Indian Media and Spread of Blind Faith

October 6, 2018

Maharishi Swami Dayanand Sarswati gave up his life preaching the true knowledge of the Vedas. Against many opposition forces he preached that God is One with many names describing His attributes. God is Formless and cannot be depicted by idols. God is Omnipresent and Omniscient. Swami Dayanand was totally against blind faith, witchcraft and performance of unnecessary rituals.

Today globally and especially in India blind faith is on the increase. In the Indian villages the illiterate people watch television and follow things shown on the screen. Everyday a new god or goddess is born and people are asked to worship him or her. These deities will solve their problems be it monetary or family matters. In reality the problems remain unsolved and the masses are totally disappointed. The rich farmers are asked to pay visits to temples on the mountain tops or at the banks of holy rivers to solve their monetary or family problems. In their hearts they know that this is not true but still go on the pilgrimage. They know God is everywhere and if they have committed any sin they will receive punishment. God is just and rewards those who do good deeds and punishes those engaged in evil deeds.

Another thing shown is that the girls in the family are burden. This is creating problems in the families. Infants and young girls are killed or are given for adoption. This is happening in spite of the fact that it is illegal to do so in India. There should not be any sex discrimination.

People with mental illness are assumed to be overpowered by evil spirits. They are not treated properly but are taken to magicians to remove the evil spirits. This is totally in effective and the person can die from these unnecessary rituals.

The media shows cruelty to children, depicts caste system and shows activities to bring down a successful person by magic spells. This is totally false and should not be shown to the masses.

It is time that the media stops these unproven activities and shows some reality in the programmes. The media should be trying to unite Hindus and not divide them by encouraging them to follow and worship many gods and goddesses. Although the media has a disclaimer that they are showing only fiction but it has an impact on the masses. It is hoped that with proper education the masses will be able to make proper decisions and remain away from blind faith and witchcraft. Learned scholars and pundits too have a role to guide the masses to follow the true knowledge of the Vedas.
