Embracing Summer the Vedic Way: Light, Energy & Balance

As we enjoy the height of summer here in the UK — with long days, sunshine, and outdoor gatherings — it's the perfect time to explore what the Vedic tradition teaches us about this radiant season.

In Vedic philosophy, summer corresponds with the season called Grishma Ritu. It’s a time of fire, energy, and transformation. The sun, worshipped in the Vedas as Surya Deva, is not just a source of light but also a symbol of consciousness, health, and divine insight.

The Rigveda praises the sun as the eye of the universe, awakening not just the world, but our inner awareness:

“Surya Atma Jagatas Tasthushascha”
“The Sun is the soul of all that moves and does not move.” (Rigveda 1.115.1)

During this season, ancient Rishis advised balance. While the energy is high, so is the heat — so we’re encouraged to slow down, stay hydrated, spend time in nature, and reflect deeply. It's also a time to connect with lightness — in our food, thoughts, and actions.

The Vedas encourage us to be grateful for nature’s gifts: sunlight, food, rivers, and trees — and to live in harmony with them. This is especially important today as we face growing environmental concerns.

For young people growing up in the UK, this is a reminder: your heritage speaks directly to the seasons around you. You don't need to choose between ancient and modern — you can blend both to live more mindfully, more connected, and more joyfully.

So this summer, whether you're in a park, a festival, or on your screen — carry a bit of Vedic light with you. Honour the Earth. Honour the Sun. And honour the peace within you.
